All About SweetPea Ring Slings

There are as many different ways to make ring slings as there are moms who make them.

I have spent time working out a way that works best for me, in hopes that other moms will like it as well.

I have tried many different types of baby carriers and find ring slings to be the most comfortable.

I have used commercially sold front carriers, hip carriers, backpacks and pouches.

I have also used ring slings and pouches from other websites.

All of the commercially sold carriers left me with a sore back or sore shoulders.

Ring slings are always my go to carrier from birth up until around three years old.  I find them to be the fastest and easiest to use.   I am a babywearer.

My preferred carriers being- ring slings first, bei-dai when they are small, soft structured carriers when they get bigger and wraps around the house.  You may run into me posting on babywearing boards.

I love carriers as much as you do.   I have worn all six of my children!

Why buy A SweetPea Ring Sling?

Babywearing has become increasing popular over the last few years and that has led to many options for babywearing!  I started making ring slings in 2006 because I found ring slings to be the best carrier for myself and my family.  My design is based on my own use, as well as my testers.  I am an avid babywearer and have worked hard on my sling design in hopes that it works well for others too!

There are several different makers of ring slings with different fabrics, shoulders and price points.

Reasons why I think you will enjoy SweetPea Ring Slings include:

Ring slings are completely adjustable and will grow with baby.  SweetPea Ring Slings are recommended from birth (see newborn safety page) to 35 lbs.

The tail of the ring sling provides an excellent cover for nursing or to block the sun.   You can also wrap the tail around the rings.  All SweetPea's come with the option to add a zippered pocket in the tail (excludes seasonal water slings).

Each SweetPea Ring sling is made from two pieces of fabric, for extra strength.  There is no 'wrong' side to the fabric.

Because of the way that SweetPea's are sewn, there is no top stitching along the rail of the sling.  Before making my own ring slings, I found that top stitching dug into my baby's chunky legs.  My design eliminates this uncomfortable problem.

My slings are made with rings that are made for ring slings!  I have my own private vendor for my rings and the company tests each batch for safety.  Each ring sling is made with two, light-weight, 3 inch unwelded, aluminum rings.  I use the larger rings because I think they are more user-friendly.  The rings are specifically made and tested for baby carriers. Each batch is load tested with 150lbs but have been tested to hold up to 1500lbs without breaking. The rings are completely lead free and made from aluminum 6061-T5.   (FAQ- No, I do not sell these rings to other sling makers.)

All SweetPea Ring Slings are made with the  shoulder. This shoulder style is pleated and very lightly padded for comfort.  My shoulder is specifically designed to cup the edge of your shoulder.  There is no other shoulder like it on the market.  Each shoulder is completely reversible, giving you two looks in one with each ring sling!

All of my fabric has been prewashed in dye/perfume-free baby friendly products.  You can use your sling right out of the package and there will be no shrinkage when you wash your sling at home.

I use different methods of stitching, not just a straight stitch.  I use more secure stitching patterns.  Each sling is double stitched, internally, all the way around.  It takes me over an hour to sew each sling.

How SweetPea Ring Slings Are Made

Fabric:

All of our fabric is pre-washed and pre-shrunk using fabric softener that is free of all dyes and perfumes.  Our house, seamstresses and our sewing studio are smoke free!

Each of my ring slings are made from 2 1/4-2 1/2 yards of fabric, on each side.   This is enough fabric to wrap around most moms and babies with extra fabric left over, as the tail.  You can special order a longer sling if desired, at no additional cost.  One price for all sized parents!  Each sling is approximately 30 inches wide (unless otherwise noted), more than enough fabric to securely hold your baby.

All SweetPea Ring Slings are made with two layers of fabric (except for Matka).  This allows for style, support and the proprietary reversible design of SweetPea Ring Slings.  All SweetPea's are 100% reversible!

I only use high quality fabrics.  Be extra cautious with slings that you order over the internet.  You need to be sure that the fabric is of high enough quality to support your baby.  My fabric selections have been tested for longevity for over 10 years!

Stitching:

Each of my slings are double-stitched at all areas and the shoulder is reinforced and stitched many times for safety.  My stitching around the body of the sling is done internally.  This means there are no outside seams that can dig into your baby's skin.  It takes me over an hour to prepare each sling.

Beginning in 2013 all SweetPea Ring Slings were made with a date of manufacture tag,  If you are trying to buy a used sling, please check how old it is!  All fabrics wear out over time.

The SweetPea Ring Sling Shoulder

In 2009 we released the New Eclipse SweetPea Ring Sling  Shoulder.  The new shoulder design has received fantastic feedback from experienced sling users and new users alike.

  • It has been called one of a kind and innovative and was designed while wearing my own six children.

  •     The SweetPea Ring Sling  Eclipse  shoulder has the streamlined look of a gathered shoulder with the structure of a pleated shoulder.

  •     This Eclipse shoulder allows for the ring sling to be 100% reversible which creates two looks in one for each sling.

  •     The Eclipse sling is the exact same on both sides (with the exception of colors and the label sewn on the tail).

  •     The Eclipse shoulder is reinforced on the inside of the sling and the way that the shoulder is pleated results in it being very lightly padded for comfort.

  •     All pleats and sewing for the  Eclipse  shoulder are done vertically.  Most pleated slings have horizontal stitching but ours features a vertical stitch which changes the way the baby's weight is distributed.

  •     The sling cups your shoulder without restricting arm movement. The way that the sling is sewn is designed to fold around the edge of your shoulder- no matter which side is facing out.  The pleats fold up, to create that cup.

  •     The Eclipse shoulder is universal.  It will work for left or right handed users and allows the user to rotate which shoulder they wear the sling on.

Caring for Your Sling

Babies are messy!  Your sling is going to get dirty.  Thankfully your sling can be put into the washer or dryer whenever needed.  Wash in cold water to preserve the colors.  Detergents and washing wears down fabrics overtime.  To prolong the life of your ring slings, spot clean or use a mild (or no) detergent when washing.

Iron your sling, after washing, to make the rails easier to adjust.
Silk slings can be hand washed or washed on the gentle cycle in your washing machine. Use a mild or no detergent at all.   Air dry or tumble dry on low or no heat.  Iron to repress the edges for easier threading.   You can learn more about the fabrics that I used on this page: FABRIC

Wrap Conversions

The ring sling/wrap carrier standard went into effect January 30, 2018.  After this time, we were no longer able to do wrap conversions because the new standard requires that each individual wrap converted sling be tested to make sure that it is safe.  That is not financially feasible as it costs $400+ to have each sling design tested.

Wrap conversions into slings have long been popular, so we understand that this is a hard change for many in the babywearing community.  I am saddend by it also but can no longer do wrap conversion because of these new rules.

Wrap Conversions are No Longer Available

About Us

I began using ring slings in January of 2006 after my second son was born.  I ordered one from a lady online and used it a lot for a few months until it started to fall apart.   I decided to try to make my own.  I played with different ideas until I finally found my own preferences for sewing the ring sling.  I ended up with several slings in different colors... you know, to match the occasion or even an outfit!  I received compliments wherever we went and people began asking me to make slings for them.  I cannot remember who I sold my very first sling to.  I wish I could but after making hundreds of them, I simply cannot remember!

SweetPeaRingSling.com first hit the Internet in September of 2006.  I went to college for Internet and Multimedia Technology and was able to marry the two interests easily.  Initially my Website was focused on my graphic design business but SweetPea quickly took over!

During all of the years that I have been making ring slings, a lot of new companies have popped up.  Some foreign markets have tried to cash in on the American babywearing business.  Amazon has closed many small businesses.  Some companies are based in the USA but outsource the sewing to China, Mexico, etc.  This takes money from American companies, makes it easier to bypass safety regulation laws and is putting American carrier makers out of business.  Please check to see where your carriers are made.  SweetPea Ring Slings are still, and have always been, made in the USA.

I live in Indiana with my husband and five sons, one daughter and I work from home.   I sew around my husband's work schedule and he does a great job of keeping the kids busy when he is home so that I can sew.  My youngest still hang out in ring slings.

I have a passion for breastfeeding education and attachment parenting methods.  All six of our children are/were breastfed without any supplementing.  Our third son was born 6 weeks early and with a cleft.  Despite being told by doctors that I would not be able to breastfeed him, he was exclusively nursed at the breast until seven months and then continued continued to breastfeed until the age of two.  I am always here to help with any breastfeeding issues, colic issues or cleft-related issues.  Please email me if you have any questions, need help or resources for breasting a cleft affected baby.

My fourth child was a planned homebirth.  However, my water broke at 33 weeks and 6 days.  At that point, I no longer felt comfortable birthing at home- for his sake.  My third son was born via a csection birth and I did not want to go through that experience again.  So, to avoid another csection, I refused any induction methods or vaginal examines (to diminish the risk of infection).   I remained in the hospital for 11 days, with my water ruptured, until I finally went into labor on my own!   I was able to have a 100% natural, VBAC (vaginal birth after cesarean), with my husband, oldest son (then 7yo) and my doula in the hospital.  It was hard birthing this way in the hospital.  We had to argue with doctors, constantly look things up and even sign waivers but in the end we ended up with exactly what we wanted- a healthy baby and a healthy mom!  The baby and I left the hospital 48 hours later, both doing great.  The recovery from my VBAC was amazing compared to my csection birth.   We trusted out guts, my body and God and ended up with a beautiful, healthy baby boy.  If you need information on VBAC's or PROM feel free to email me.

Our fifth and sixth children were surprise twins!  They were born early at 29 weeks.  I went into labor on my own and they doctors were able to stop it once but not the second time.  Despite their best efforts, I still dilated to 10cm.  They were 2lbs 10oz and 2lbs 13 ozs and spent 10 weeks in the NICU.  Very hard time for us!  But they are now doing great, are catching up in size and were exclusively breastfed until 3 years old..   They are now completely caught up gestationally and do not have any residual health issues from being born so early.

All SweetPea Ring Slings are made by me in my sewing room.  The design has been tried and tested and I take pride in the quality of my slings.
Thank you for your interest in my slings.  I love knowing that I am helping to keep babies close to their caregivers.  Enjoy your baby and Hold them while you can.

Disclaimers

Always use caution when wearing your baby.

Just like any other baby device, ring slings need to be used safely and properly.  Your child's safety is your responsibility.

Baby carriers can pose a suffocation risk when used incorrectly, especially with newborns.  Review the Newborn Safety Page before ordering and using your new ring sling.  Your baby should never lie chin to chest, in a "C" position.  This position restricts their airway, compromises their breathing and can cause death.  The safest position for an infant is the vertical "belly to belly" position shown on the instruction page

You should always be able to see your baby's face while wearing your baby, to ensure proper breathing.

A baby carrier should mimic how you would hold a baby in your arms.  You baby's head should be 'visible and kissable'.  The baby should be worn 'high and tight' on your body.

Should only be used by sober, alert adults.

Periodically check seams for any wear.  All fabric can wear out overtime.  Be especially cautious of this when buying used slings.

Do not use the sling around open flames or while cooking!  Fabric is flammable.

Use SweetPea Ring Slings at your own risk and only after you have read the full instructions.

Only participate in SAFE activities while you are using your sling.  Be careful when bending over.

Ring slings are not a substitute for a car seat in the car.

Please don't make me write more disclaimers then this.

Do not copy my information for your site.  That is called plagiarism and I will find your site.
